Early Life and Career of Julie’s Mother
Joan Plowright was born on December 28, 1929, in Brinn Lincolnshire. Joan’s parents were a journalist and newspaper editor. Her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in acting, and she joined Bristol Old Vic Theater Scholl as a result.
Plowright began her acting career in the late 1940s. After debuting at Croydon in 1948, she began acting in London in 1954. Her first professional role happened in 1956 when she was cast
in The Country Wife.
She met her later husband Sir Lawrence Olivier in 1957, when they co-starred in the original London production of The Entertainer. She continued with her acting in The Entertainer and received her first Tony Award for her role in A Taste of Honey.
Plowright’s career flourished even better after her marriage to Olivier. Since 1993, she began working closely with the actor and appeared more regularly in films.
Apart from a successful career as an actress, Plowright has served as the President of the English Stage Company. She was appointed the president in March 2009 and served through to 2014.
The actress’s vision declined steadily in the late 2000s due to macular degeneration. After a successful career, she announced her retirement in 2014, marking six decades in acting.

She married Olivier who was previously married to an actress Vivien Leigh for 20 years. Julie’s parents remained married until her father died in 1989.
