ToggleIn this economy, not many of us can afford to buy new appliances often, so it’s especially important to keep them running smoothly for as long as possible.
For this guide, we spoke with Best Solutions Appliance Repair in Canada, and they shared the best DIY fixes for the most common home appliance problems.
There are many problems that can be fixed and checked at home, especially if you know what you are doing, but it’s still better to consult certified professionals.
Fridge
The most common issue with a fridge is that it’s not cooling properly. It might be difficult to notice at first and may seem minor, but if not addressed, it can cause irreversible damage to fridge components. This can happen due to blocked air vents, a faulty thermostat, or dirty condenser coils.
Focusing on fixing these issues should be enough if the cause is identified correctly. If needed, watch some tutorials on how to clean the coils, check temperature settings, and ensure proper airflow for your fridge model.
Another very common problem is water leaking from the fridge, usually caused by either a broken water inlet valve or a clogged defrost drain. Many people mistakenly think that simply defrosting the fridge will solve the issue. However, that might not be enough – you also need to inspect the water valve for leaks and learn how to fix it for your fridge model, or unclog the drain hole, which is a fairly intuitive task.
Washing Machine
It’s very irritating when a washing machine suddenly stops functioning properly. But first, we want to emphasize the importance of taking care of your washing machine regularly.
It’s pretty common for a washer not to drain due to a clogged drain hose, a faulty pump, or even an unbalanced load. So, you might just need to redistribute the load into two smaller loads. Also, it makes sense to inspect the pump or check for obstructions first.
Another common problem we hear about is excessive vibration or noise. Again, this can be caused by an uneven load, so you need to check its distribution. Also, for some people, it’s an uneven floor, which can be corrected by adjusting the machine’s leveling feet to ensure it sits flat and stable. The last possible reason could be worn-out drum bearings, which typically cause a grinding noise. This is considered a more complicated issue, and if you’re not a handyman, it’s better to consult a professional.
Dishwasher
It’s common to hear people complain that their dishes are not clean enough, even after the longest cycle in the dishwasher. This can happen for several reasons, including hard water buildup, insufficient detergent, and clogged spray arms. For the latter, you simply need to clean the spray arms according to the instructions. For the other issues, use a rinse aid and check the type of detergent you’re using.
The second most common problem is the dishwasher not draining, often due to a blocked drain hose or a malfunctioning pump. You can quickly fix this by inspecting and cleaning the drain filter or checking the hose for clogs.
These are the most common home appliance issues that sometimes are just inevitable but we definitely suggest paying attention to them.
