Sanya Richards-Ross was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She was born on February 26, 1985 to Archie and Sharon Richards. Sanya started running when she was at the young age of seven years.
She event went on to represent her school Vaz Prep in the annual youth championships. When Sanya was 12 years old, her family opted to relocate to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to ensure that she attended an American high school. Doing so would give her more opportunities to obtain an athletic scholarship that would earn her a place at an American university.
Richards-Ross graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 2002 and she obtained the 2002 Gatorade National High School Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Richards-Ross then attended the University of Texas, Austin where she majored in Business and graduated in 2005.
Sanya Richards-Ross’ Career
Relocating to the United States worked in the favor of Sanya Richards-Ross in helping her create a successful career. In 2003, she went on to represent the University of Texas and became the first freshman to win the NCAA national championship. She won in the 400 meters and the 4 x 400 meters relay.
Notably, her win in the 400 meters saw her set a new U20 record. In the same year, Sanya turned eighteen years and went on to claim her first senior national title where she won the 400 meters at the U.S. national championships. The win saw her qualify for the 2003 Paris world Championships.
In the Paris championships, she came fourth in the 400 meters semis but won gold in the 4 x 400 meters relay. She qualified for her first Olympic in 2004 and finished sixth in the 2004 U.S Olympic trials.
