Classes
When you first start creating your character, you’ll be able to choose their starting class, or “Core class” as it’s called in this game. The core classes are all attuned differently to the three main stats of the game, strength, dexterity, and intelligence. It’s also important to note that every class has 2 of something called an “ascendancy class” which is a specialization each class can branch into that greatly impact how you approach the game with their unique abilities. Now let’s get into the classes and their ascendancies.
Warrior
Starting at a whopping 15 strength and 7 intelligence and dexterity. This class is heavily focused on melee attacks, their strength attribute helps them wiled large weapons, and it makes them excel at war of attrition-style battles where you see who’s health bar depletes first. Warriors can wield large two-handed maces or rely on a more classic loadout of sword and shield. They can also imbue their weapon with fire. It’s a very beginner-friendly class and very straight forward.
They’re tanky, but also very slow, so this coupled with their lack of ranged options make them easy targets for far off enemies.
Their two ascendancy classes are:
- Titan: This subclass improves on the durability of the default warrior and their AOE attacks. Making them great at handling groups of enemies.
- Warbringer: Besides your usual warrior attacks, they also have some magic so you have to keep track of your health and your mana now, although they have plenty of survivability so you’ll be fine in most encounters. Just don’t get cocky!
Ranger
This 15 dexterity, 7 strength and intelligence class is all about their mobility and crowd control from long range. They specialize in bow usage and can deal with a wide range of situations thanks to their elementally imbued arrows and poison usage. Their abilities are mainly focused on their use of the bow as well as a lot of mobility options that are supposed to ensure that you stay a good distance away from your enemy, where this class thrives. Their downsides would be that they’re not very hard to defeat in combat due to their low defense and how hard it can be for some players to learn how to use the mobility skills well. The two ascendancy classes for ranger are:
- Deadeye: They deal very high damage both 1 on 1 and to groups of enemies, but you need to keep your mana in check, or you’ll be too open for attacks.
- Pathfinder: Their offensive options rely on the creation of throwable cocktails that deal different effects as well as poison usage, but they depend on you having a lot of flasks with good effects.
Witch
With 15 intelligence, 7 strength and dexterity, these characters specialize in calling forth minions and using other dark magic.
Their ability to summon different kinds of monsters to help out in battle and use of chaos magic should not intimidate you. In fact, the witch might be the most beginner-friendly class in the game thanks to their ability to outnumber and outdamage their opponents. However, their defense is very low, so be careful and let your minions do the talking! Their ascendancies are:
-
- Blood mage: the most active subclass for the witch, the blood mage is able to deal pretty good damage with their attacks if you have the right gear. They can also steal life from their enemies and give it to themselves, but be careful because some spells use health instead of mana!
- Infernalist: imbued with fire, this witch can summon even more powerful minions and cast even more powerful spells at the costs of life and mana. Be careful with this powerful albeit not very versatile build
Sorceress
Also sporting 15 intelligence with 7 strength and dexterity as their starting stats, sorceress relies on powerful spells in all the elements instead of minions. They don’t have a signature weapon as all they need is their spell mastery, but if you equip them with some wands they can use some spells even if your mana is empty. This class is very fun for those looking to do great damage in a flashy manner, although they can be difficult for beginners! Their ascendancies are:
- Stormweaver: This subclass is all about the elements and casting powerful spells, their mobility, and defense options are quite limited but make up for it with their damage.
- Chronomancer: is with abilities that are related to the manipulation of time itself, this Sorceress subclass is very different from everything we’ve covered so far because they can affect how you approach fights in general. However, it can be extremely hard to learn and used right.
Mercenary
With starting stats of 11 strength and dexterity and only 7 intelligence, you can imagine this is somewhat of a middle point between warrior and ranger. Drop the bow for a fancy crossbow. There are many kinds to choose that vary up their rate of fire and strength. Another thing that sets them apart is their use of elemental grenades. This class can be quite the undertaking for newcomers for their variety in ammo types and weapons for different situations, so be mindful. Their ascendancies are:
- Witchhunter: Great for straight forward fighting thanks to their diverse weaponry and abilities. Both bosses and groups of enemies have reason to fear this class.
- Gemling: imbuing gems into their body, these subclass will stack itself with different attributes to have the upper hand in a battle.
Monk
11 dexterity and intelligence and 7 strength, this is the middle point between rouge and magic users. These are also one of the more complex classes to pick, and they’re all about their quickness and elemental affinities. Don’t let their melee combat distance fool you, Monks are quite fragile and if you don’t use your mobility abilities you will be defeated quickly. Their ascendancies are:
- Invoker: relying on the elements, this powerful subclass will deal quick and devastating damage to their opponents, but you have to keep track of your mana, or you’ll be almost useless.
- Acolyte of Chayula: utilizing chaos magic, this subclass will protect and attack with great effect, but they depend a lot on the gear you give them as well as being close to breaches.
In conclusion
Path of exile 2 has many classes for pretty much every play style, but there’s still more to come, with 6 more classes confirmed to be coming. Maybe some day we’ll talk about those!
